I will not talk in class. Write this sentence 100 times; it is due tomorrow! The homework assignment punishing my entire 5th grade class angered me. The teachers stern words pierced my heart. I remember thinking, "This is ridiculous to spend time after school writing a useless sentence." I realize now why I dreaded school; today its called attention deficit disorder. I spent many hours each night laboring over homework assignments. "How am I going to complete this stupid assignment in addition to my daily homework?" Internally, I protested the boondoggle assignment. Little did I know that punishment in 5th grade would transform into a gift. After writing those 6 words 100 times, I learned how to memorize anything, although unapparent to that 5th grader.
She was so stubborn that the "Leeza" producers were forced to enlist the help of her husband, her daughter, and even the school principal to convince her to appear on the show. Thanks to their herculean efforts, they were finally able to cajole her into taking a few days off without revealing the real reasons for going. So far, so good. Less than a week later, she and her daughter boarded a flight to Hollywood, while I took a different plane out of JFK, several hundred miles away. When I arrived at the hotel in California, I was shocked to learn that they were staying in a room only one floor above me! The taping wasnt scheduled until the next morning, and while I wanted to avoid bumping into them, I didnt exactly relish the idea of being cooped up in my room and ordering room service. So I came up with a plan.
Diatomaceous earth is a natural product that isnt exactly earth. It is actually the fossilized remains of microscopic organisms called Diatoms. You might remember them from junior high science labs. If you dont, ask a 5th grader! So these organisms create a shell around them that later gets fossilized and these fossils are ground formed in to diatomaceous earth, which is 84% silicon dioxide or Silica. It has already been proven by science that silica is that one trace mineral that is essential for human life. This is why this wonderful natural substance can prove to be highly beneficial when ingested by human beings.
Mouthing the words, she said, "Its time. Follow me, please." I felt a lurch in my stomach. Here we go. The producer hurriedly led me to the studio, where Leeza and the studio audience were waiting for me. After personally introducing herself to me (Leeza was very warm and articulate, instantly putting me at ease), the red dome lights on all the cameras were blinking, which meant they were now taping. Easing herself into a chair next to me, Leeza started off the show by asking what it was Mrs. Jordan did for me over thirty years ago. I related the story about how the announcement of those three words, "THATS RIGHT STEPHEN," was such a powerful moment and how it forever changed my life.
In the mood for a little local sightseeing, I put on a pair of dark sunglasses and my favorite baseball cap, and then I peeked out into the hallway before making a mad dash for the stairwell. Yes, I know, Ive watched too many spy movies. Still I can dream a little, cant I? On the morning of the taping, the hotel security staff came up to my room and escorted me to the service elevator for a ride down to the first floor, where a presidential-like limousine was waiting for me behind the hotel. Forty-five minutes later, the fifth grade teacher and her daughter waltzed through the hotel lobby out to the front, where a bellhop was standing at the door of another black limousine.
When determining what to select for 5th grade science projects, there are several factors that should be considered. What are the teaching objectives? Is the project practical for this age group? What is the cost factor involved? Is the project simple enough for students in this age group to complete successfully and learn from? If the project is to be entered into a science fair, is it portable? Perhaps most importantly, will the student have fun completing the project? The cost factor must be kept to a level that the student or the students parents can easily afford. Some schools may have scholarships available, but not all will. In high poverty areas this is especially important, so take advantage of any financial aid that is available. Being eliminated from competition based on the lack of financial ability may teach the student a lesson, but not the desired one. Lessons learned at this age will affect the students future attitude toward learning. Completing 5th grade science projects can enhance a students curiosity and willingness to learn in later grades. Relatively simple projects relating to physics principles or global warming might well foster an interest in more advanced projects later.
