I know this statement is shocking. Some of you may feel that I have announced the end of the civilization as we know it. How in the world will people learn math without the latest and greatest math textbook. The answer is simple. The same way people have always learned math prior to the modern education system, by doing math as they go about their everyday lives. You may ask "Is that possible?" "Would it work?" I believe so. Its the reason I made this statement when I was asked if my new book, "Math is Childs Play" was going to be a Math Textbook. But in all fairness, lets look at both sides, school math versus everyday math. First lets look at school math. I have been studying of late the topic of Math Anxiety. Increasing number of people profess to hate math, to be no good at math, to be anxious about doing basic math. These same people were taught math in our public schools. When did this situation of math anxiety start? Who knows for sure? But whats significant is that its increasing, not decreasing. Its increasing despite the modern education system, despite New Math and the latest teaching methods, despite all the money and energy that has been put towards the problem. Just for the record, I found a book "Mathematics; A Human Endeavor" by Harold R. Jacobs copyrighted in 1970 which in its preface the author mentions the failure of New Math in the schools. A book from 1964, titled "Mathematics for Elementary Teachers" by Ralph Crouch and George Baldwin which was written to teach math to elementary teacher who found themselves expected to teach math although they had no training in math.
Knowing that the 6th grade math curriculum is based on essential math concepts such as arithmetic and data analysis, measurement, geometry, probability amongst other things, having access to math worksheets which are also accompanied by other interactive activities like learning games, assessments and reinforcement can make learning 6th grade math a lot more fun than learning by rote. Instead of learning a topic and then doing lots of mathematical examples, based on what you have just learned, teachers have found that the use of interactive activities, learning games, printable worksheets, assessments, and reinforcement. the math curriculum should rely on many learning tools - lessons with activities, worksheets, reinforcement exercises, and assessments will help a student to learn each math topic in a variety of ways and this should help supplement the teaching in class.
Simple answer.as much as we are the same, we are different. And thats a really cool thing! If we can learn how to appreciate the differences and work with them instead of against them, we will much happier, more connected and more productive. We tie school policies into the conversation, set some expectations about limits and boundaries on behavior at school and help the kids identify their adult support systems for any questions or situations they may need help with. I sometimes get challenged by parents and teachers about covering this topic in mixed gender groups. My answer is always the same. Its important to begin healthy communication and understanding about gender differences early on in the process. Its a set up for healthy and effective communication and mutual respect over the life span. Another issue is the impact of technology on how and when kids are developing relationships today as well as the kinds of information they have available at their fingertips. This makes it even more necessary to teach skills and boundaries at this age.
Her fathers decision to educate sons rather than invest in a daughter who would eventually marry ended mothers future in the academic world. She, however, had acquired an education that would jumpstart my learning experience. Mother used to prepare a small portion of the ground outside the mud structure we called our house and used it as blackboard or writing pad to teach me A-B-Cs, 1-2-3s, and simple words. If there was wind, class was cancelled. If it rained, it was an holiday. She taught me stories and listened to my childish stories. But in that basic existence, mother passed on to me what I now do in my calling as speaker, writer and seminar leader.
The next step is a conversation about why boys/girls act the way they do, followed by lots of questions about crushes, flirting and relationships. Theres also some discussion about parents and why they seem to be so annoying, but at this point the kids are much more interested in themselves and their classmates. We have one more day together. I ask each gender separately how they would like to frame our last day together. Unanimously the kids tell me they would like to ask each other some questions to gain understanding into why boys/girls act the way they do. I give them an opportunity to write down their questions anonymously and end with an "anxiety check". Everyone is feeling pretty comfortable.
Another way of getting help for 6th grade math, as well as going a little extra homework, is to find a tutor or get access to an online learning system. There are many of these places available now a days and you can often get free access for few days to test drive a program, to see whether their method of teaching is a good fit for the way that your child learns subjects and takes in information. Make sure you find a system that encompasses the level and breadth of subjects that your child is learning. A lot of math students find equations, probability and algebra difficult to grasp. With probability for example, students find it bewildering taking in the concepts of probability and chance, as well as statistical inference and analysis. Imagine a child not fully understanding this topic in the class setting and then being given 6th grade math probability homework sheets. They would be completely overwhelmed.
