Class 5 Fraction Word Problems

The 5th grade level is where students begin to understand more about how words can paint a picture. Instead of "the tree had many colorful leaves", they now read "the tree was overflowing with fiery warmth of the colors from the sun - red, orange and yellow burst forth." This is exactly where you need to take your marketing material. Paint a picture for your reader; bring them in to what you want them to know by entering their minds and painting pictures on their brains. Think of your writing like "graffiti for the mind." By painting with words rather than dazzling with brilliance you will appeal to a much larger audience, enhance your message and add more to your bottom line. Create wording that glides down a mountain like a bright red sled sifting through the fresh snow at breath taking speed - words that can be understood and be "seen/scene". About eight years ago, I was in my New York City apartment one Saturday morning, thinking about all the people in my life who made a difference. There were many, but my fifth grade teachers face swam into focus. The image of her powerful smile was crystal clear. As soon as I saw her in my minds eye, my attention immediately focused on a way to thank her. I got quiet and reflected on this. A few moments later an idea was born. Why not thank her on a national talk show? What could be better than that? The idea was so strong, so powerful and whats more it felt right. After firing off a letter to six national talk shows, I kept it to myself and waited. Ideas should be allowed to percolate and develop in secret before they are shared with the rest of the world. There is a time and place for everything, so I prayed that if it was meant to be, then Mrs. Jordan would be presented with a big surprise at just the right time.
As your student goes through the second half of the 5th grade year it is a pivotal point in the level of self- confidence s/he will have going into the new environment next year. If s/he can perform well and consistently, doing things is a relatively organized way, there will be a foundation of both confidence and skills to fall back on in the new middle school environment. This is a critical time to foster the development of habits of operating in an organized manner. Do you know where your books are? Did you turn in the book report on time? Did you tell Mom about the poster board you need for tomorrow before or after dinner? (This would be the same poster board the teacher told you to get 3 days ago.)
Often people use the Internet while they are doing other things. With mobile devices as popular as there are today, there is no telling what else a person is doing while they are locating your content online. These facts greatly reduce the attention span and comprehension levels of the person reading your content. This is where the 5th grade average comes in. When I first started writing for the Internet back in 1998, I got told by a few early clients to "tone it down" or even to "dumb it down" when it came to my writing. I was fresh out of school for writing and recently published in big name magazines so I didnt "get" why they would be telling me to downplay my writing.
What was your 5th grade teachers name? How is that relevant to you, now? Dont try to apply logic just free flow with me a few moments. Focus on what significant characteristic you specifically remember about her/him. Indulge me if you will, as we tie up some very loose frayed ends. As you travel back in time to the address of residence, can you recall the specific numbers and name of street or road? If not, this minute, give it some thought later. See what shows up when you are least expecting it. Part of your self still remains in that sphere of life, in that classroom, in that school with that particular teacher; in the midst of very happy times, some sort of disappointment occurred. The lingering diffused memory of the disenchanting incident need not be obvious, but the memory of the teacher should.
You will want to practice as many of these academic organizational skills as you can with your child as 5th grade comes to an end. Also it is very important to set up situations with your child over the summer to practice these skills, even though s/he is not actually in school. First, keeping track of your belongings should be a habit that is worked on daily. Second is the skill of getting places on time. Many parents miss the wonderful opportunity of using the summer as a learning and practice time for these critical organizational skills. You do not have the pressure of getting to school every day and activities and getting the homework done in the evenings. If your child even partially masters just these two skills, it will go a long way toward smoothing the path into 6th grade. Another important skill is getting papers and books from school to hoe and back to school. You will want to have a great working system for handling this challenge.
