Lesson plans always take a lot of time and dedication to put together. Each teacher has their own method to creating the perfect lesson plan in 2nd grade. One thing every teacher has in common is the variety that must be put into the plan. Children get bored when the same methods are used over and over again, especially young children in 2nd grade. Children need variety, including hands-on teaching, worksheets and even computer time. Each child has a different method of learning, which is why it is important for teachers to include variety in their 2nd grade lesson plan. Hands-On Learning Kids love to get their hands into things. Whether you are planning a science experiment or teaching a new math concept, giving children the ability to use their hands to learn gives them another view on the topic. Using more than one sense allows children to really get into what they are learning. Even kids who do not require hands-on techniques to understand a topic will enjoy the hands-on learning you provide.
Helping your student practice their 2nd grade spelling words is not only necessary, it can help them become better readers. Also, knowing words on sight can build confidence as your child is required to write more. Lastly, getting 100% on a spelling test can make your child feel pretty special so make sure you post those grades on the refrigerator for some positive reinforcement. Tip #1 - Read. Reading to your child or having them read to you is by far one of the best ways for your child to become better at spelling. They become familiar with the words and the intricacies of the English language. Let you child pick books of interest from the public library, the school library or purchase grade level appropriate books. Many books have grade levels on the front cover which makes it easy for parents to know which books will be right for their child.
Math skills are very important for your 2nd grader to be. Theres no better place to start than practicing basic math facts. Start with addition and subtraction of small numbers, then practice some multiplication and simple division. There are many places online where you can practice for free or print worksheets. Have your child help make cookies to show them how math is used in daily living. Kids generally love to bake, especially cookies. Another way to teach your child math concepts is by having them add the price of grocery store items on one of your shorter grocery trips. They can use a calculator or teach them to estimate and write down the amounts on a little notebook. Additionally, you can ask your child to help you count money. This is a very important skill that is well worth the effort.
Worksheets Worksheets have been around since school began. It is the tried and true method of most teachers. While many schools are getting away from strictly using worksheets as a method for teaching, they are necessary at some point. In 2nd grade, kids can begin to do worksheets on their own with little direction. Providing worksheets in combination with other teaching methods will reinforce the topics that are being taught, as well as give teachers a way to gauge each childs understanding of the topic. Computer Today, computers are an essential part of teaching. Using computers in your 2nd grade lesson plan allows children who are visual learners to really get a grasp on the topic. Using a computer lets children use their eyes, ears and hands. All these senses combine to give children a great method of learning. There are many reputable educational websites available that provide games that are perfect to incorporate into your lesson plans. They coincide with the basic 2nd grade curriculum, giving teachers another outlet for their lessons. Hands-on learning, worksheets and computer time all create the perfect combination of learning for students of all abilities. Each classroom is filled with a diverse group of children. Rather than catering to the way the majority learns, incorporate a wide variety of methods in your 2nd grade lesson plan and watch your students flourish.
Custom Individualized Instruction In an ideal world, every student would be able to receive one-on-on instruction to optimize his or her learning experience. However, this is rarely possible in a modern classroom setting where there can be over twenty students and only one teacher with no aids or helpers on hand. This high ratio of students to teachers can make teaching 2nd grade math even more difficult. But online math games are designed to move at the personal pace of each child who plays. Kids who need to go back and review ideas from kindergarten and first grade are free to do so, while others who are ready to tackle multi-digit addition and subtraction problems will find them presented in a vibrant setting that is both entertaining and engaging. In this way, teachers can present individualized instruction even when they arent able to personally work with every student in the class.
Happily my daughter did get a 3rd prize nod from the science fair judges - while they noted that it was not exactly scientific it was one of the more original entries. Personally I think it was pure quantum physics - but thats another story! When the science fair was over and the jars returned to our home, I was given the opportunity to experience another specific difference between the 3 jars of rice. When cleaning out the contents of the jars, I removed the covers and each time was greeted with a unique and distinctive aroma. From the ignored rice there was a particular smell that reminded me of mildew - like opening a suitcase of damp clothes that had been forgotten in an attic long ago. The angry rice emanated a rather more offensive odor, similar to vomit - I didnt linger there!! Finally, when I removed the lid of the rice that had received love, there was a distinctive sweet fruity smell - quite pleasant in fact. It doesnt take much of a scientific brain, or imagination for that matter, to draw the conclusion that good thoughts produce preferable results. If our thoughts can affect cooked rice in this way it would be fair to assume that we similarly affect the food we eat with the thoughts we think when we are preparing it. Imagine how we might affect others by what we think of them or indeed, how we affect ourselves with the thoughts we think day in and day out over the period of our lifetime.
