Playing is a great way to learn math. I like miniature golf and billiards for learning about angles and force. Of course this may sound like Physics, Newtons Law of Relativity. And it is, but there is also no better way to learn geometry and algebra than with a practical application. What could be more practical than learning as you play? Wow, heres another real life example for learning math. I like playing games. You name it; board games, card games, strategy games. If it challenges me and tests my intellect and problem solving capabilities, I like it. Games like Nim, checkers, chess, mancala, Stratego, Battleship, Risk, etc. help develop logic sequences and strategy. Games like Uno, Skip-bo, Set, Rummikub helps children develop their ability to see patterns. Games like cribbage, gin rummy, Scrabble actually help children practice addition and multiplication.
The Douglas Academy Current and former students, community members and staff from the San Antonio Schools staff gathered in the historic auditorium of Douglass Academy on Sept. 26 for a homecoming celebration and dedication ceremony to mark the completion of a major construction and renovation project at the school. "Douglass Academy has a rich history and tradition. Our children here have inherited that history and they have the potential to become all that they want to be," said District Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Durón on the stage where legend has it that Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and B.B. King once performed.
Knowing that the 6th grade math curriculum is based on essential math concepts such as arithmetic and data analysis, measurement, geometry, probability amongst other things, having access to math worksheets which are also accompanied by other interactive activities like learning games, assessments and reinforcement can make learning 6th grade math a lot more fun than learning by rote. Instead of learning a topic and then doing lots of mathematical examples, based on what you have just learned, teachers have found that the use of interactive activities, learning games, printable worksheets, assessments, and reinforcement. the math curriculum should rely on many learning tools - lessons with activities, worksheets, reinforcement exercises, and assessments will help a student to learn each math topic in a variety of ways and this should help supplement the teaching in class.
So lets look at the other side. Is it possible for people to learn math in everyday life; running their business or household, doing projects, etc.? Is this possible? I believe it is and it is already happening without anyone being aware of it. My daughter professed to hate math, yet she is doing math everyday on Neopets. When I asked her about it, she said that it wasnt real math. So what kind of math was it? I think she meant that it wasnt school math. I met an airline pilot who went into great details about the calculations she did in her head in order to fly the plane. Later she professed that she hated math in school. She wasnt good at it. She wasnt even capable of balancing her own checkbook. When I pointed out that the calculation she did to fly the plane was math, she was adamant that it wasnt because she wasnt any good at math in school. She said "Its just a formula that I plug numbers into." Marilyn Burn relates a similar story about an interior decorator who could price out the cost for a complete room, but also felt that she wasnt any good at math. These are people who couldnt do school math but are doing the math that their everyday lives demand of them. They probably learned this math on the job; hence they dont relate it to school math.
I recently spent a few days with a group of sixth graders teaching a unit on puberty. On my first day in the classroom, the kids were nervous, anxious, apprehensive and giggly! If giggly is not really a word then Im suggesting it be added to the dictionary, as I encounter it in the first few minutes of every 5th and 6th grade puberty class Ive ever taught. Okay class, let us begin. Day 1 We begin the unit by answering the most pressing question, "Why do we have to talk about this?" which the kids do a great job of answering for themselves. We then move onto "When will the changes start happening to me?" along with "What exactly will happen?" and "How long will it take until its over?"
6th grade science projects are not expected to be original; it is perfectly okay to do an experiment that has been done before. Some schools start doing science fairs in sixth grade, but they are not usually too competitive as their purpose is really to get the students interested. The judges simply want to see that you have put the effort into your project and made up a nice presentation for it. Still, there are endless ideas of topics you can pick. One fun idea for 6th grade science projects is to see how well people can identify different smells when blind folded. This project is fairly simple. All you need is a blindfold and a few items with different smells. A few ideas might be vanilla, cinnamon, coffee beans, vinegar, and so on. There are many, many different things you can use. To do this project, you will need a volunteer or two. It would be a good idea to make up a chart in advance so you can record your results. Blindfold your volunteer and put each scent under their nose one at a time, and record whether or not they were able to identify what the scent was. Originality is not the key factor here at this age. The judges just want to see that you are capable of performing an experiment on your own, writing up a report on it and presenting your finding in an organized, easy to understand way. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing an experiment that has already been done, as long as you try to make it your own.
