Your child can use the measuring spoons and glasses, pots and pans, and even ladles to measure, mix and make your science projects, with the added advantage that he can keep it secret from the rest of the school. Now, contrast that with letting your child do his experiments in the school laboratory. And you can make it fun for him and the rest of the family! Well, of course, your child must do majority of the 5th grade science projects but you can help out, cant you? For example, in an experiment where wet plaster is dropped from varying heights to predict the size of craters when meteorites fall on the Earth, you can help your child arrive at just the right consistency of the plaster. All you need are water and plaster of Paris and a small box filled with soil.
Have you ever watched the television show, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? On this show, adult participants are quizzed on subject matter from 5th grade textbooks, opposing a panel of 5th grade students. The adults generally dont fare very well, while the students shine. Why is this? Could adults, with much more education, including college degrees, know less that 10- and 11-year-old students? This show clearly points out some major differences between childhood learning and adult learning that I will discuss in this article. ets start with a 4-stage learning model. Stage 1: Data Stage 2: Information Stage 3: Knowledge Stage 4: Wisdom.
You will want to practice as many of these academic organizational skills as you can with your child as 5th grade comes to an end. Also it is very important to set up situations with your child over the summer to practice these skills, even though s/he is not actually in school. First, keeping track of your belongings should be a habit that is worked on daily. Second is the skill of getting places on time. Many parents miss the wonderful opportunity of using the summer as a learning and practice time for these critical organizational skills. You do not have the pressure of getting to school every day and activities and getting the homework done in the evenings. If your child even partially masters just these two skills, it will go a long way toward smoothing the path into 6th grade. Another important skill is getting papers and books from school to hoe and back to school. You will want to have a great working system for handling this challenge.
The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" also can relate to your writing, with the correctly chosen words you can turn a simple sentence into a chapter of information. One of the biggest obstacles in writing for marketing is that we are trained to write "intelligently", by this I mean coming off with wording that demonstrates our full use of the English language. In English classes starting in high school, we are taught to expand our vocabulary and expound the use of it. Take the last sentence for example, it could have just as easily been written - "In English classes starting in high school, we are taught to use a lot of words and explain in detail what is happening." Both have the same meaning but each carries a different weight with readers. The first version is fine for something like a blog but in marketing you need to appeal to as many different styles of readers as possible.
The math standards are a bit more complicated, especially because I have not taught K-12 Math (whereas I have experience with K-12 English). Knowing that concrete thinkers suffer with abstract reasoning and that that is the basis of algebra, student maturity becomes a serious issue when determining why Benny gets it and Sally cannot get it yet. Also with math, it is not just repetition with complexity increasing, but individual concepts. You cant simply skip multiplication and expect students to automatically divide. But once I laid out the K-12 standards and divided, grouped, rearranged, and created a total picture, I felt much more at ease. The science standards, while difficult for a non-science teacher, really depend on State X and State Y agreeing to teach certain concepts and scientific areas at specific grade levels. Science also has that wonderful magic called a lab. Students who go to lab with a hypothesis and then experiment following specified steps, draw conclusions and finally prove or refute their original hypothesis are actively engaged and so they remember and are able to replay and apply their knowledge. This makes uniting concepts, units, and areas of study far easier. While many insist that is time to abandon the Common Core and move back to state and local expectations or to reinvent with a new plan, this presents the problem of continuity in education and offering equal and ample opportunity for learning for all students everywhere. I believe it is totally possible to understand and implement the Common Core and still teach with strategies and technique that reach and teach every child. They supply commonality and continuity that benefit every learner.
Talk shows sure know how to treat their guests! Upon arriving at the Paramount lot, I was led to the "green room," where guests waiting to go on the show sipped tea, coffee or even booze (if they were desperate enough). I opted for plain water, my mouth was parched. While waiting, a very frazzled producer stopped by and quickly requested that I make a short ten-second statement on tape to be played later. I said something like, "Mrs. Jordan, you made a very big difference in my life, and I am here to thank you for it." The producer snatched the tape and disappeared like there was no tomorrow. I was alone again. Looking around the room, I was mesmerized by all the photos on the red walls (why do they call it the green room??) of famous people who were previously on the Leeza show. I was jostled out of my reverie when the door suddenly burst open and the same producer was back.
