To get your child ready to tackle 3rd grade math with confidence, its time to introduce learning aids at home. Most parents assume that worksheets, word problems and visual representations are the most helpful tools, but many forget the importance of online tools that offer educational value. If you choose the right programs, you can help pave the way for success for your child by incorporating fun, challenging games that promote the learning and understanding of 3rd grade math. Many online math games are designed purely for entertainment and wont do much in terms of teaching your child. While these games can be fun and engaging for third graders, you want to choose games that will practice the skills being taught in school. Look for games and puzzles that are part of an adaptive learning program. This means that the online games are well-thought out and match the same set of skills that are being taught in the third grade curriculum. The program is structured toward each individual student and fills in the gaps where the child is struggling.
Everyone knows by the time theyre in 3rd grade that its teachers pet who has the honor of cleaning the erasers, wiping down the blackboard, and replacing stubs with fresh, long white pieces of chock that felt amazingly smooth as your fingers slid lightly over their cool hardness as you placed them neatly in the chock tray. Mrs. Conroy smiled at me as she arranged the pages of each students best cursive writing on the bulletin boards flanking both sides of the clean blackboard. We had everything in place for tomorrow. It would be a great day. And I was, indeed, a good girl who had learned the hard way to wiggle her toes a few months ago with the encouragement of the physical therapy heroes.
Prepare Kids For Higher Math Just as learning addition and subtraction get kids ready to grasp multiplication and division, the concepts introduced in 3rd grade math lay the foundations for even more complex ideas that will be introduced in future grades. Ensuring that kids have a clear understanding of math at the elementary level means that theyll be able to move on to math in middle school and high school without a problem. If kids pay attention in school and receive any extra help that they need, chances are good that they will understand and retain the concepts necessary to succeed with math. Including online math games as part of academic instruction offers extra insurance in the form of engaging learning tools that kids will remember as they progress through school. The use of online math games at home or in school helps to give kids the academic edge they need to succeed in 3rd grade math. Through interactive lessons, individualized pacing and visual reinforcement of math concepts, kids can literally see what theyre learning and gain a fuller understanding of skills that theyll be using both in school and in everyday life.
What I consider to be his worst mistake, and this is again an inexperience issue because he hasnt yet seen this happen, is that he didnt consider the mathematical harm that he would cause his students. They wont experience the harm until next year when their 4th grade teacher expects certain knowledge that they wont have. I have no doubt that this young man can teach mathematics to 3rd graders. But I know from many years of experience with UCSMP, that the terminology used and the methods used vary greatly from what is found in a more traditional text. Unless he has been fired or put back on the district path, his 3rd grade students will have a difficult time in 4th grade math. His students deserved better from him.
Ronald Bass, one of the lead researchers in an ACSM study of middle-schoolers academic performance and relative physical fitness, found that "students meeting cardiovascular fitness standards were six times more likely to meet or exceed Illinois reading standards and over two-and-a-half times more likely to meet or exceed the math standards." If this werent the most compelling reason to reverse the watering-down of physical education in our schools, it would be hard to find the one that is. The best brain-boosting results are found from cardiovascular exercise, the same type of exercise experienced by avid fencers. Fencing is just one of many sports that incorporate vigorous cardiovascular movement.
So, whats wrong with this picture? It certainly seems that he cares about his students and wants what is best for their mathematical futures. If you have read any of my other articles, read my bio, or have been to my website, then you know how important mathematics education is to me; and this situation quite literally appalls me on many levels. New teachers! Are you paying attention? When you get hired by a school district, you are agreeing to teach what they want you to teach, when they want you to teach it, and how they want you to teach it. If you dont want to do that, then you go teach elsewhere. You do not get to unilaterally decide to go off on your own. The school district chose that math series for a reason. This teacher deserved to be fired for breach of contract at the very least. If he was so troubled by the math series, he should have talked to his supervisor immediately. There were solutions to his problems that never got explored because he was so sure he knew better than anyone else. And FYI: Those older teachers have survived in the teaching field because they are wiser and have lots of valuable experiences and lessons to teach you. Take advantage of them. (I am pretty sure that his problems resulted as much from his lack of experience as from the textbook series. The first year of teaching is difficult for everyone.)
