Its true, "The weakest ink is more enduring than the strongest memory." I confess; today, I am thankful for that boondoggle assignment which gave me strength and a coping technique I used while waiting in the hospital. My husband had successfully battled congestive heart failure for six years until a sudden and severe infection violently attacked his already weakened heart. After the fourth time in the hospital during a three month period, he was officially put on the heart transplant only eleven days after he was admitted. While he fought for his life, I battled the silence and the waiting. I read magazines and newspapers. I listened and watched people. I prayed. With the attention span of a gnat, I decided to memorize a Bible verse which had caught my eye as a car with a personalized license plate drove by. I was not familiar with the verse, "Rom. 15:13." I counted the number of words in the verse, Romans 15:13, thirty-one words to be exact. "Not too many words; quick to write; at least it would keep my hands busy." I purchased a journal in the hospital gift shop and returned to the intensive care waiting room. I began writing the verse over and over again.
In the mood for a little local sightseeing, I put on a pair of dark sunglasses and my favorite baseball cap, and then I peeked out into the hallway before making a mad dash for the stairwell. Yes, I know, Ive watched too many spy movies. Still I can dream a little, cant I? On the morning of the taping, the hotel security staff came up to my room and escorted me to the service elevator for a ride down to the first floor, where a presidential-like limousine was waiting for me behind the hotel. Forty-five minutes later, the fifth grade teacher and her daughter waltzed through the hotel lobby out to the front, where a bellhop was standing at the door of another black limousine.
You have to guide your child, encourage his innate curiosity and build on it for numerous 5th grade science fair projects. You will be surprised at how many questions he has that can be answered with simple demonstrations using simple materials and equipment. Simple Processes No matter how simple the process adapted, it must still adhere to the scientific method. This way, your child can be involved from the first to the last step of the scientific process that, in turn, will make him better prepared to present the results of his study. Keep in mind, however, that the scientific process is not a set of rigid rules. You can be more flexible with the process but within limits since objective observations and results must be made. After all, 5th grade science fair projects are supposed to be fun - not rigid - and easy.
At first I was irritated and even offended but like other things that I dont understand, I began to research it. Since then, it has changed even more since more people use the Internet and we are now capable of "connecting" nearly anywhere. This means there are a lot of distractions for the person reading your writing and keeping it simpler, with more white space on the page makes it easier for the reader. Shorter sentences, simpler words and using bullets and numbered lists make your online content more pleasing to the eye and the mind of the online reader. Its a different style of writing than offline magazines and other publications.
This doesnt mean that you sacrifice quality and basic editing in the process of going simpler but it may mean you trade in some of those $10 words for $5 words and cut that 1,000 word piece to 2-500 word pieces instead. It means that you put items in bullets and instructions in lists and you get to the point as quickly as possible without a lot of fluff. Some writers are better at producing offline content and cant shift to the online methods of successful content. Then there are some who can rake in the readers online but couldnt hack it at all in the offline publishing world. Some gifted writers (or well trained writers) can learn to do both. The latter requires being able to shift back and forth according to which venue you are writing for. Ultimately, understanding the difference will make a world of difference in your writing career.
Mouthing the words, she said, "Its time. Follow me, please." I felt a lurch in my stomach. Here we go. The producer hurriedly led me to the studio, where Leeza and the studio audience were waiting for me. After personally introducing herself to me (Leeza was very warm and articulate, instantly putting me at ease), the red dome lights on all the cameras were blinking, which meant they were now taping. Easing herself into a chair next to me, Leeza started off the show by asking what it was Mrs. Jordan did for me over thirty years ago. I related the story about how the announcement of those three words, "THATS RIGHT STEPHEN," was such a powerful moment and how it forever changed my life.
