Once your child(ren) have found the topic for their experiment, it is necessary that they immerse themselves in the information surrounding the topic. By learning as much information about it as is possible, they are better prepared when they present their experiments results, to not only give a good showing of their results, but also to answer any questions that any viewers might have. The power that is held by knowledge, can give your child(ren) a taste of what it is like to be highly intelligent -- and enjoy it. Although there are rough spots to be expected, for the most part, encourage your child(ren) and allow them to bring their creativity to light and use it in an excellent way in their presentation. Try to point it out to them how much of a chance their 6th grade science project is for them to creatively complete something of their choosing, and use it to educate people around them. Giving them the chance to express themselves, even through a 6th grade science project, can mean the world to them, especially at such a difficult age. By giving them the freedom to choose their own topics, you are also encouraging them to expand their knowledge and interest in the world around them through discovery of animals, objects, or ideas by completing their 6th grade science project. Give your children the world, and open up the door to their future -- encourage them to complete their 6th grade science project on their own.

But enough with the games, lets talk some serious stuff. If you want to learn math, do a project like decorating a room. Do the whole works from calculating the paint or wallpaper, to calculating the material and sewing the drapes, to ordering and positioning the furniture. Design a new cabinet layout for your kitchen, including calculating cabinet dimensions, appliance positioning and project costs. Try building something like a drop desk or a play ground swing set, or a go-cart. How about doing a baking or sewing/quilting project? Do all the preparations for a dinner party, including the planning, shopping, seating arrangement, cooking, etc. Try paper trading some stock and track them for a year. Start an eBay business. Wow! Wouldnt that be something, having your childs math project turn into a home-based business that pays for your childs college education? Its possible and its real life.

We play a rendition of childhood game, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, where I ask the kids to tape index cards containing the changes that happen during puberty on the appropriate gender symbol. Yes, more giggly! We then move on to basic anatomy and physiology, including an overview of the brain, glands, the pituitary gland, hormones, testosterone and estrogen, followed a discussion of the sperm, the egg, menstrual periods, wet dreams and ejaculation. The giggly is over, replaced with an occasional exclamation "Ewwwww, thats gross!" These outbursts are consistently normalized by reinforcement that the body is an amazingly intelligent and complex machine; that the miracle of life is indeed a miracle; and that each child in the room is, in fact, a miracle. We take some time for questions and then move on to an introduction to the emotional changes that happen during puberty as a set up for our next class.

Finding good ideas for a 6th grade science project can be overwhelming at times if you are uncertain of where to get the ideas. If you find yourself wanting to hide your head when this time rolls around for the annual 6th grade science project, you are not looking in the right places for ideas, and you are possibly conveying a negative message to your children concerning the 6th grade science project. We all have memories from our school days when we had to do the infamous 6th grade science project, and most of them are more likely than not to be bad, however by keeping it upbeat and encouraging, you can teach your child(ren) that completing an assignment like this will not only further their knowledge, but also help them learn to be a productive individual on their own.

Ive read many books on personal finance, and a common thread that runs through many of the best ones are vigorous reassurances that it is possible to make good financial choices and even invest intelligently for retirement without doing math. It would appear that many people avoid learning basic skills to take care of their personal finances at least partially because they are afraid that personal finances require too much math for them. Architecture, medicine, personal finance... all of these are held up as practical fields that require lots of math. When teachers and parents do this, their intentions are pure. After all, what could be better than motivating students to study by connecting the subject matter with the real world? Unfortunately, we often do students a disservice by over-emphasizing the math required for certain endeavors.

We had the pleasure of being in the audience, listening to the 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands perform. Our granddaughter played a clarinet duet and Im proud to say they sounded quite good. There were soloists, too, who did well. Put the entire band together, there were some missed notes, a reasonable amount of squeaks, air-and-no-notes, and shrill pitches along with missed beats. This is the first year these children have played their musical instruments, so you would expect the learning curve to still be going on. All-in-all, though, they performed much better than youd expect; you could see the determination on their faces, and they should be extremely proud of where theyve come in one year.
