The Common Core Standards, at first glance, are a bit overwhelming and frightening. While I feel comfortable navigating the English/Language Arts since it is my specialty area, I do find them lengthy and somewhat overpowering on my first study. With examination and reflection I recognize that expectations such as "Describe a character... " runs K-12 as a common expectation, it is the complexity of the text that changes. Knowing this I can run the gambit of standards and integrate them quite simply regardless of grade level and student achievement level. Thus this magnificent list (98 pages, in fact) becomes less wieldy and eventually my friend.
5th grade science projects can include seeing which brand of soda will decay a previously lost tooth the most. To do this experiment, you will need several different brands of soda, some teeth that you have lost recently, a few small dishes or cups, and a pen and paper to make a chart to record your findings. To begin, you can set up the various bowls or cups and place a tooth in each one. Next, add a different brand of pop to each bowl or cup. Be sure to label each one so you know what brand of pop is in it. Place them in an out-of-the-way place where they will not be disturbed and check them each day to see if there is any decay starting. Once you see some decay beginning, you can mark it on your chart and then see which one gets the most decay.
You were so influenced by this critical time frame, that an allegiance formed during this period reflects various subject material being worked on in current relationships. The arrangement you inadvertently place preeminence upon has continued to filter the seeds of energizing artistic excellence in your current state of affairs. Its deep; real deep, but you are aware of what I am talking about without fully/adequately being able to articulate the succinct words in precise manner. The arising sense of the sacred sensual sexual artistic self in retrospect to those events form what the passionate cohesiveness nature is missing. The first hint of real disillusion appeared and because it did, you buried and disguised it in many personality costumes and sublimated forms of arbitrary denial. The identifiable need for status, prestige and respect, fraught with its insidious forms of all encompassing waves of apathetic overtones, need be investigated and yanked from the soil by the roots. The determinedly ruthless soul demands voluntary surrendered expression of your latent gifts and will not be refused.
What was your 5th grade teachers name? How is that relevant to you, now? Dont try to apply logic just free flow with me a few moments. Focus on what significant characteristic you specifically remember about her/him. Indulge me if you will, as we tie up some very loose frayed ends. As you travel back in time to the address of residence, can you recall the specific numbers and name of street or road? If not, this minute, give it some thought later. See what shows up when you are least expecting it. Part of your self still remains in that sphere of life, in that classroom, in that school with that particular teacher; in the midst of very happy times, some sort of disappointment occurred. The lingering diffused memory of the disenchanting incident need not be obvious, but the memory of the teacher should.
You have to guide your child, encourage his innate curiosity and build on it for numerous 5th grade science fair projects. You will be surprised at how many questions he has that can be answered with simple demonstrations using simple materials and equipment. Simple Processes No matter how simple the process adapted, it must still adhere to the scientific method. This way, your child can be involved from the first to the last step of the scientific process that, in turn, will make him better prepared to present the results of his study. Keep in mind, however, that the scientific process is not a set of rigid rules. You can be more flexible with the process but within limits since objective observations and results must be made. After all, 5th grade science fair projects are supposed to be fun - not rigid - and easy.
The math standards are a bit more complicated, especially because I have not taught K-12 Math (whereas I have experience with K-12 English). Knowing that concrete thinkers suffer with abstract reasoning and that that is the basis of algebra, student maturity becomes a serious issue when determining why Benny gets it and Sally cannot get it yet. Also with math, it is not just repetition with complexity increasing, but individual concepts. You cant simply skip multiplication and expect students to automatically divide. But once I laid out the K-12 standards and divided, grouped, rearranged, and created a total picture, I felt much more at ease. The science standards, while difficult for a non-science teacher, really depend on State X and State Y agreeing to teach certain concepts and scientific areas at specific grade levels. Science also has that wonderful magic called a lab. Students who go to lab with a hypothesis and then experiment following specified steps, draw conclusions and finally prove or refute their original hypothesis are actively engaged and so they remember and are able to replay and apply their knowledge. This makes uniting concepts, units, and areas of study far easier. While many insist that is time to abandon the Common Core and move back to state and local expectations or to reinvent with a new plan, this presents the problem of continuity in education and offering equal and ample opportunity for learning for all students everywhere. I believe it is totally possible to understand and implement the Common Core and still teach with strategies and technique that reach and teach every child. They supply commonality and continuity that benefit every learner.
