Most 3rd grade classrooms will also work with three-digit numbers, which can be confusing to some children. These problems are often detected when young children are asked to perform estimations, which is a regular part of 3rd grade math courses. Practicing 3rd Grade Math Lessons At Home The best way to treat many math problems is to first find the source of the problem and to adapt the instruction to concentrate on weak areas. Regular at-home math practice is absolutely critical during the first few years of a childs education, as at-home practice will serve to reinforce concepts and to allow children to move along at a faster pace. Practice is especially important during the holidays, the summer and during other breaks in a childs school year.
If encouraged from a young age, children will naturally find ways and means to experiment with questions that interest them. A science fair project will always be well performed if the child is interested in the topic. There are also different ways of doing 3rd grade science fair projects. By experiment or investigation is the most common type of project. An example of this type of project would be if frozen candles burn as well as candles at room temperature. This is a wonderful way for children to learn, because they are able to actually see how things, exposed to various elements, cause different reactions. A child could demonstrate his 3rd grade science fair project by re-testing experiments that have already been done. The child could even do additional experimentation to make the project more interesting. A project could also involve research where the relevant information is collected and the answer to the question is presented.
I close my eyes; Im back there banging fat felt eraser blocks together making chock dust clouds slide down the slanted rays of sunshine coming through the open window on this golden afternoon the first week of 3rd grade. I try not to breathe that fuzzy stuff in, but it doesnt really matter because I am elated with my elevated position. I feel special. Close my eyes again to travel back even further; I smell the suffocating odor of steaming hot wool as the nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital wrapped my paralyzed limbs in these cooked blankets rather than let me start 2nd grade with my friends. Hot packs they were called; the doctors said if I was a good girl and let them wrap me up as though I were a sausage several times a day I might someday wiggle my toes again. Well, did I have a choice? I was a good girl, but try as I might, not one of the ten moved. But that didnt really matter because I wasnt in an iron lung like some of the kids - I could breathe on my own. (Jonas Salks miracle was yet to come.)
What I consider to be his worst mistake, and this is again an inexperience issue because he hasnt yet seen this happen, is that he didnt consider the mathematical harm that he would cause his students. They wont experience the harm until next year when their 4th grade teacher expects certain knowledge that they wont have. I have no doubt that this young man can teach mathematics to 3rd graders. But I know from many years of experience with UCSMP, that the terminology used and the methods used vary greatly from what is found in a more traditional text. Unless he has been fired or put back on the district path, his 3rd grade students will have a difficult time in 4th grade math. His students deserved better from him.
Tracking Progress and Introducing New Lessons Math programs can also generate charts for teachers and parents that show a childs progress over time. By using these charts, parents can spot math lessons that might benefit from different instruction techniques and discuss this with teachers. Theres also a more tangible benefit to math software for 3rd grade kids. Young children enjoy working with computers, and by using math software at home and in the classroom, youll be helping your child stay interested in his or her education. Learning math can be a very positive experience. This is one of the most powerful gifts that parents can give to their kids and certainly one of the most effective ways to treat the various problems that young children have with mathematics.
The second major problem deals with the parents. Because the series is so different, parents quickly find that what they are seeing in their childs textbook doesnt look like anything they ever called math. They quickly discover that they are unable to help their children with questions, and they dont understand the spiraling concept of UCSMP so it seems to them that their child is weak in basic skills. They dont know that their child will have better retention and understanding of mathematics at the end of the year than the students of a traditional text. They dont know because no one explained anything to them. UCSMP requires an enormous amount of explanation and training for the parents. (Im sure you can foresee the problems of having poorly prepared teachers trying to explain UCSMP to frustrated parents. Its not a pretty sight.) With the problematic issues surrounding UCSMP, does this young teacher deserve to be fired? Absolutely! He made very poor choices based on his own arrogance. He broke his contract with the school district and, thus with the students and parents. He used the internet for his own purposes. (I suspect to garner support for his decision.) And he was setting up his students for future failure. Unforgivable.
